House in Koukaki

Koukaki, Athens

This project is a thoughtful renovation of a small studio apartment in Koukaki, where contrast becomes the main tool for redefining space, light, and atmosphere. The design is structured around a bold half-black, half-white concept that both organizes and visually expands the compact layout. Set within the vibrant urban fabric of Athens, this renovation reflects a contemporary Athenian sensibility: compact yet elegant, minimal yet expressive. It demonstrates how a small studio can be transformed through strategic contrast, light, and spatial clarity into a home that feels both refined and expansive.

Upon entering, the apartment is anchored by a darker zone composed of matte black walls, doors, ceiling, and kitchen elements. This area feels intimate and grounded, almost cocoon-like, absorbing light and creating a sense of depth that subtly conceals the limited footprint. The kitchen is seamlessly integrated into this darker volume, appearing monolithic and refined, with discreet lighting that highlights its function without disrupting the mood. As the space unfolds, it transitions into a bright, white living area flooded with natural light—an essential quality in the Athenian context. White walls, soft textiles, and light herringbone flooring reflect and diffuse daylight, making the studio feel open, airy, and significantly larger. The living zone is calm and inviting, with subtle textures and minimal detailing that prevent the palette from feeling sterile.

The apartment is organized along a clear visual axis that enhances depth and continuity. From the living area, the darker kitchen and entry zone recede into the background, creating a tunnel-like perspective that elongates the space. This interplay between compression and openness is key: the black zone frames and emphasizes the brightness of the living area, while the white zone offers relief and balance. The transition between the two halves is precise yet fluid. A linear ceiling light guides movement through the apartment, visually connecting both zones, while consistent materials and carefully placed elements ensure cohesion. Furnishings further bridge the contrast—light pieces maintain the openness of the living area, while darker accents subtly echo the kitchen palette.
